Learn More>>Child Support>>Traditional Calculation

Georgia child support awards used to be pretty simple. In determining Georgia child support guidelines, there were essentially three questions to address. Who is the non-custodial parent? How much does the non-custodial parent earn in gross income per year? How many children does the non-custodial parent have? The answers to those three questions determined how Georgia child support guidelines were determined prior to January 1, 2007. Calculating child support obligations and child support guidelines with no concern for the custodial parent's income, allocating for health insurance costs, factoring the costs of child care, etc . . . yielded harsh child support obligations to a non-custodial spouse under the old Georgia child support guidelines.

While the old Georgia child support guidelines are not applied to new Georgia child support cases after January 1, 2007, the old Georgia child support guidelines still impact Georgia family law matters to the extent that these child support guidelines must still be adhered to on cases determined prior to January 1, 2007. Depending on the harshness of the old Georgia child support guidelines, a Georgia parent may be eligible to have his/her child support matter revisited under the new Georgia child support guidelines.
